چکیده

Abstract Commercial producers raising centrarchids in Arkansas routinely report winter mortality. Juvenile are susceptible to harsh conditions. The Coppernose Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus purpurescens is a popular sport fish for recreational fishing, and there no recommended best management practices feeding of this species. An outdoor trial was conducted investigate the effect different regimens on performance 2014–2015. Four were implemented that included twice per week (2×/week), once (1×/week), month (2×/month), or (1×/month). Twenty‐five (initial weight = 2.59 ± 0.19 g) stocked tank (16 tanks, 4 replicates). Temperatures ranged from 0°C 16°C during trial. After 95 d, differences ( P > 0.05) final loss. Fish fed 2×/week 1×/week had higher survival < than those 2×/month 1×/month. Fatty acid profiles initial distinctly postwinter fish, although frequency did not appear influence fatty Bluegill. Levels saturates fish. monounsaturated acids 16:1 18:1(n‐9) Initial contained lower levels 18:2(n‐6), 20:4, 22:6(n‐3) Total polyunsaturated (PUFAs) n‐3 n‐6 also while ratio n‐6/n‐3 differ significantly among Data indicate (1) overwintering infrequently preferentially conserve PUFAs (2) 1 × /week 2 may be beneficial strategy increase temperate regions USA.

Ultraviolet vision and foraging in juvenile bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus)

Ultraviolet (UV) photoreceptors have been reported in a wide variety of freshwater and marine organisms, suggesting that UV vision is prominent in aquatic ecosystems. However, its adaptive significance remains speculative. The present study tested whether the foraging of juvenile bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) is enhanced in the presence of UV radiation (UVR). Laboratory feeding trials were con...

Toxicity of 19 adjuvants to juvenile Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill sunfish).

Nineteen adjuvants, many used as surfactants for aquatic herbicide applications, were applied in static bioassay to bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) for 96 h to determine median lethal concentrations (LC50). Surfactants are added to the tank mix as a percentage (v/v) of the total volume, in contrast to herbicide application rates, which are usually expressed in kilograms per hectare. Two ...

Differences in fatty acid composition between cerebral brain lobes in juvenile pigs after fish oil feeding.

Very long-chain n-3 PUFA from fish are suggested to play a role in the development of the brain. Fish oil feeding results in higher proportions of n-3 PUFA in the brains of newborn piglets. However, the effect of fish oil on the fatty acid composition of specific cerebral brain lobes in juvenile pigs is largely uninvestigated. This study examined the effect of a fish oil diet on the fatty acid ...

Functional Anatomy of Feeding in the Bluegill Sunfish, Lepomis Macrochirus: in Vivo Measurement of Bone Strain

The suction feeding mechanism of the bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, was studied in unrestrained fishes by the simultaneous recording of cranial muscle electromyograms, opercular cavity pressures, and opercular bone strain patterns. The electromyographic profile was similar to that of other advanced teleosts and consisted of preparatory, expansive, and compressive phases. The pectoral gi...

Evaluation of Oil Content and Fatty Acid Composition in Seeds of Different Genotypes of Safflower

Evaluation of four safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) genotypes for oil content and fatty acidcomposition showed that oil content varied from 22.16 to 34.39% and the highest seed oilcontent was obtained from Isfahan14 genotype (34.39%, respectively). Among those fatty acidswere detected, linoleic acid (75.81- 77.86%) was the predominant fatty acid followed by oleic(12.57–13.75%), palmitic (6.0...
